Understanding Image Formats: JPG vs PNG vs WebP

Every image format is a trade-off between quality, file size and features. Picking the right one matters more than most people think — the wrong format can make a file 10× larger for no visible benefit, or silently destroy the transparency you needed.

  • JPG/JPEG: the universal photo format. Uses lossy compression that’s excellent for photos with smooth gradients. No transparency. Best for photographs on the web.
  • PNG: lossless with full transparency support. Perfect for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with text. Files are large for photos — a PNG photo can be 5–10× the size of an equivalent JPG.
  • WebP: the modern best-of-both. Lossy and lossless modes, transparency, and 25–35% smaller files than JPG at the same quality. Supported by every modern browser. Use it whenever you can.
  • AVIF: even smaller than WebP, but encoding is slow and support is still catching up. Not yet a safe default for sharing.

When to Convert (and When Not To)

Convert PNG → JPG when you have a photo saved as PNG and need a smaller file for upload — you’ll typically save 70–90% with no visible difference. Convert JPG → WebP for any web image — same quality, much smaller. Convert anything → PNG only when you need lossless quality or transparency, and accept the larger file.

One rule never to break: don’t convert JPG → PNG expecting better quality. The compression damage is already done — the PNG will just be a much bigger file with the same artifacts. Also avoid converting JPG → JPG repeatedly; every save at low quality degrades the image a little more.

Transparency: The JPG Trap

JPG has no alpha channel, so converting a transparent PNG to JPG fills transparent areas with a solid color (usually white). If your logo or graphic needs transparency, keep it as PNG or WebP. Always check the result after converting — a white box around a logo on a dark website is a classic giveaway.

Converting for Different Uses

  • Website images: convert to WebP at 75–85% quality. If your platform doesn’t accept WebP yet (some social schedulers, email), use JPG.
  • Printing: don’t convert down — keep the highest-quality original (TIFF, PNG or maximum-quality JPG).
  • Sharing/messaging: JPG is the safe universal choice; every app and phone opens it.
  • Archives: PNG or the original format — never archive as a low-quality JPG.

Batch Conversion Tips

Converting dozens of images one by one is painful. For bulk jobs, convert a whole folder at once with a desktop tool, then spot-check a few results before deleting originals. Keep a consistent naming scheme (e.g. photo.webp alongside photo.jpg) so you can always trace back to the source.

Try the image compressor after converting to squeeze files even smaller — format conversion plus compression is the fastest way to speed up an image-heavy page.
